Dry Needling

What is dry needling and how does it work?

Dry needling is a technique that can be used to address musculoskeletal issues such as tight muscles, muscular pain and discomfort and promote healing by increasing localised blood flow.

Sterile, thin, solid needles (like acupuncture needles) are inserted into tight muscle knots (called trigger points) to relieve pain, improve mobility and promote haling by increasing blood flow and relaxing muscle fibres. Often a brief muscle twitch response will be elicited, which means that the trigger point has been released. It helps to release muscle fibres, reduce inflammation and stimulate the nervous system to reduce pain or discomfort.

As the needle is inserted it generally feels like a small prick, deep dull ache or twitching sensation. Mild discomfort may be felt for 1-2 days afterwards.

It is particularly effective on shoulders, back, large muscle areas such as quadriceps and hamstrings (front and rear of thighs), Achilles and arms (eg, tennis or golfer’s elbow).

Your therapist will discuss whether dry needling is suitable as part of your treatment plan.
